Thomas Menna
Copywriter | Creative | Mastermind
An honors grad of the School of Visual Arts (BFA 2010), Thomas Menna was born and raised in Red Bank, NJ. Prior to SVA he attended the Savannah College of Art & Design. His second job as a teenager was at Jay & Silent Bob's Secret Stash - the famous comic book shop of his hometown. Before that he pumped gas.
He doesn't like writing "about me" sections on websites because he hates being self-involved - that said, here it is:
A self-styled polymath, I've never quite fit one image. And that's fine. My interests range from Star Trek, TOS to Muay Thai Boxing. I nerd out on the basics - Star Wars, X-files, comic books, Superman, Marvel movies, Minecraft, and Harry Potter (to name a few) but also on the UFC, NBA and basically every other sport (I am a NY fan tried and true: Yankees, Knicks, Rangers, Giants). Then the not so basic - Typography, Twin Peaks, poster art, collegiate wrestling and 80s nostalgia. Before Pokémon Go I collected all 8 badges (with my patented Haymaker deck) at the local Toy's R Us circa 1999.
I love film, like all film (literally, it's on my degree). Guilty pleasures include the classics, vintage sci-fi, B-movie horror and my moderate obsession with 1991's Point Break. One must always be reading. I read a fiction book and non-fiction book at the same time (Stephen King to Steinbeck; Isaacson to Jon Krakauer; Psychology, history, and science). The librarian never fails to look befuddled when I check out this week's plunder. I'm fascinated with storytelling and advertising, technology, business, sales and leadership. On a good day I can sell water to a well. It's exhausting.
Needless to say - I write. Writing is the one form that allows me to pull from my unlimited range of interests and ideas. I can constantly learn and grow with my keyboard, while challenging myself conceptually and intellectually. Specifically there is one type of writing that allows me to create things, to write as craft - to communicate a thought indefinitely - to be creative but disciplined. Copywriting.
What's the deal with a screenwriting degree anyway?
