Ford Mustang Shelby® GT350R "BULLITT" Commercial
When I first started thinking about concepts for the 2017 Mustang Shelby® GT350R commercial the first thing that came to my mind was the chase scene from the 1968 Steve McQueen film, Bullitt (oddly enough the 2017 Mustang was modeled after the classic fastback Mustang popularized in, you guessed it - Bullitt). That scene has always stuck with me since I first saw it at age 16, especially the natural sounds. The realism of it – there was no music, just the throaty roars of engines, squealing tires, and frenetic downshifting. I later learned, not surprisingly, that Bullitt earned an Academy Award® nomination for Best Sound that year.
That is the concept I wanted for the commercial – no music, no talking, just the natural sounds of the engine roaring in our ears as the Mustang did it’s thing. As a final homage to Bullitt, I envision the Mustang driving outside of San Francisco.
This Mustang is stimulating. It’s badass. And it’s gorgeous. When you hear it – you want to see it. You need to see it. The idea here is one of build up. The commercial teases us, like an alluring woman slowly undressing. It’s arresting. We hear it, we see parts of it, but it isn’t until the very end that we see all of it. We need it.
The BULLITT theme can be continued into not only other commercials but also in print form. I envision recreating some vintage 1960s Mustang advertising (as seen here and below) but for the 2017 GT350(R).
